In this seminar, I will address my vision of ethnomusicology by disrupting the area studies model, long typical in ethnomusicology, to highlight instead the intellectual history that has informed my own projects over the past thirty-plus years throughout the Caribbean. These projects include local village ethnography and the study of creole culture in Saint Lucia; zouk as a world music originating in Martinique and Guadeloupe; the politics of governance and theories of power, practice, and agency in Trinidad; and the question of work ethics, labor, and circulation through the collaborative biography of a major calypso and soca bandleader whose reputation extends from Trinidad to the Caribbean, the US, Europe, and Canada
