The European Cooperation project SHORES – Exploring Sound and Music along Europe’s Shores invites artists from Portugal, Norway and the Netherlands, for three artistic residencies on topics approaching the interface water / land / humans. SHORES hereby calls for three independent performers / composers / sound artists (artists from other disciplines may also apply), who will be selected based on their potential contribution and career relevance for the aims of the residencies. These three artists will participate and circulate through all the residencies.
Aims
The residencies aim to facilitate sustainable and inclusive collaboration/creation at a transnational level. They will focus on shared and green strategies for musical creation as a means to highlight and disseminate European diversity in sound and musical creation and performance. The project allows networking of composers / performers / sound artists circulating through the three European consortium countries, implementing tasks that address shared capacity building, collaborative creation and joint concerts / public presentations. The call aims for gender balance and the diversity of profiles (gender, race, ability, sexual orientation, age, etc.) in all activities. A selection of the residencies’ outputs will be available for viewing and/or downloading on the SHORES’ website and connected database.
Tasks’ description
The three residencies will involve a combination of outdoors fieldwork with in-site creative work. The residency in Aveiro (10 days) will focus on the endangered context of the saltpans and the lagune and will be centered at the Fábrica Centro Ciência Viva de Aveiro, a former industrial building close to that type of locations. The residency in the Netherlands (6 days) will address heritage sounds and musics of the Wadden Sea area. It will be centered at the World Heritage Center Waddenzee in Lauwersoog, which will also allow access to heritage instruments. The residency in Trondheim (5 days) will be focused on the development of digital and technological tools and strategies informed by ocean environmental research. It will be centered at “The Portal” lab for interactive multimedia.
The SHORES project also includes a series of four workshops, prior to the artistic residencies. The workshops will engage the local community and address the collection of sonic and material contents related to shore/coastal locations and/or relevant research fields. Output from the workshops will be uploaded to a database and shared for reuse at the successive workshops and residencies. The residencies will thus be held during the first 8 months of 2026, ensuring their articulation with the material from the workshops. The residencies may include an open day for local composers / performers / sound artists attend and engage with the project’s team, to be advertised for each residency.
Due to the tight timeframe of the project, most of the workshops will have been completed at the time of artist selection, so the workshops do not directly involve the called artists.
Artists’ fees
Artist fee for the workshops is in the range 4950 EUR for each artist, varying due to different wage levels in each country. There is a small production budget for materials and other production costs, approximately 15000 EUR, combined for all three artists over all three residencies. Lodging and travel costs directly associated with the tasks will be paid by the project.
