Biography

Marisa Ponce de León began her music studies with the piano and then decided to take the flute as a profession. From 1997 to 2008, the Conservatory of Queretaro and The Fine Arts School were her second home. She won first place at the most prestigious National Flute Competitions in México in 2003 and 2006, 2007 and third place in 2013. After graduating from the University of Veracruz with the highest grades with the renowned flutist Natalia Valderrama, she was a visiting musician at the National Symphony Orchestra, becoming later the principal flutist of the Chiapas Symphony Orchestra, teacher and co-founder of the Woodwind Academy at the University of Sciences and Arts of Chiapas (2011 to 2016). Her interest in contemporary music determined her proposal for the master´s degree at the University of Aveiro: Mysticism and musical performance: an interpretative proposal of pieces for solo flute by Mario Lavista and Torü Takemitsu’, a combination of western classical music with meditative and therapeutic instruments, in a project concretized through the performance of the ensemble ‘Sidereae Nunciae’, of which is a creator and a constituent element. Recently she attended the Festival ‘Time of Music’ in Viitaasari (Finland), playing pieces from Kaija Saariaho and guided by the flutist Camilla Hoitenga and the composer Saariaho.
