Biography

Rui Marques is an integrated researcher at the Institute of Ethnomusicology, Center for Studies in Music and Dance (INET-md). Graduated and master's in music education (Polytechnic of Coimbra - Coimbra Education School), he also completed a master's degree in music teaching (specialization in Theory and Aural Training) at the Department of Communication and Art of the University of Aveiro (DeCA-UA). In 2019, he completed his PhD in Music, specialization in ethnomusicology (DeCA-UA). He taught in specialized music schools (Conservatório Regional de Coimbra and Conservatório de Música de Coimbra) and at several higher education institutions (Polytechnic of Coimbra - Coimbra Education School; Polytechnic Institute of Porto - School of Education and School of Music and Performing Arts, University of Aveiro, University of Minho and Lusófona University). As a researcher, he was part of the teams of the research projects "Music in Between" and "Our music, our world: Musical associations, wind bands, and local communities (1880-2018)", developed in the INET-md, University of Aveiro and funded by FCT. From 2019 to 2022, he worked as a PhD Researcher in the scope of the project "EcoMusic - Sustainable practices: a study of the post-folklorism in Portugal in the 21st century", also at the University of Aveiro. His main research interests include local musical practices, musical associations, musical revivalism, music and education, musical instruments (with an emphasis on traditional string instruments) and music as intangible cultural heritage.
