Biography
Manuel Deniz Silva is President and researcher of INET-md and assistant professor at NOVA FCSH. He received his PhD in 2005 from Paris 8 University (France), with a dissertation on Portuguese musical life during the first years of the Estado Novo dictatorship (1933-1945). In INET-md he coordinated the research group “Western Art Music from the Perspective of Cultural Studies” and the “Music and Media” thematic strand. He was an associate researcher at the Centre de Recherches sur les Arts et le Langage (EHESS-Paris, 2007-9), where he developed his research on music and politics during the Portuguese dictatorship, organising with Esteban Buch and Igor Contreras the international conference “Dictatorship and State music”, which resulted in the collective monograph Composing for the State: Music in 20th-century dictatorships (Silva, Buch & Contreras, 2016). He participated in the research group “Music and Francoism”, coordinated by G. Zalduongo (University of Granada, 2010-13), conducting with Contreras research on the musical connections between the Iberian authoritarian regimes (Silva & Contreras, 2013). He has also addressed the impact of exile on the musical output and political engagement of Portuguese communist composer Lopes-Graça, who settled in Paris between 1937 and 1939 escaping the political persecution of the Estado Novo and also on his connections with French communist musicians during the Cold War (Silva 2017, 2018). He was in the executive committee of the Observatory of the Protest Song and is currently in the scientific council of José Mário Branco Documentation and Research Centre - Music and Freedom.He was the PI of the research project Listening to the moving images, funded by the FCT (2009-13) and, amongst other outputs, he has co-edited a volume on music industries and sound archives in 20th century Portugal (Silva & Pestana, 2014), discussing the impact of technological mediation in Portuguese music from an historical perspective, in dialogue with the institutions responsible for the safeguarding of this heritage (museums and sound archives) and edited a special issue on Music, sound and cinema (2018). In the last five years he has published several articles and book chapters on music and politics, film music, music and literature, radio broadcasting, musician’s trade unions, colonial music, women and musical patronage, and other topics relating to 20th century Portugal musical history. He has organised various activities of scientific dissemination for the general public in cultural institutions (Museum of Portuguese Music, Art Nouveau Museum, Casa da Achada, Casa da Música, a. o.) and has collaborated actively since 2017 with the Cinemateca Portuguesa (Portuguese Film Museum), editing and reconstructing several original scores for silent films composed by Armando Leça and Tomás de Lima. He was vice-president of the Portuguese Society for Music Research (2010-13) and since 2014 he is co-editor of the Portuguese Journal of Musicology.Research Group: Historical and Cultural Studies in Music
